The programme, which was agreed at the 2013 ARGE Conference as part of its sustainability roadmap, will see the delivery to ARGE members of generic, Pan-European EPDs for hardware products by summer 2015. In addition to the UK’s Door and Hardware Federation, some of the key national associations in the lock and hardware industry have committed to the programme, including the Fachverband in Germany, UNIQ in France, as well as Spain’s AFACE, Austria’s FMMI and Netherland’s VHS. Italy is the latest nation that has committed to the EPDs, while Scandinavian associations are also represented by Finland’s Fin Committee and the SME in Sweden, with Switzerland’s VSSB making up the nine members signed up so far. Other national associations are also close to committing. EPDs are designed to offer a coherent expression of data throughout the life cycle of a product. Developed to provide environmental data from LCA studies in a common format based on rules known as Product Category Rules. Commenting on the importance of the programme, Hans Weissenböck, ARGE Chairman, said: “We are delighted that 10 national associations, including some of the most influential in our industry, have recognised the importance of the sustainability agenda and the commercial benefits of generic EPDs. “EPDs are the most effective way for communicating a product’s verifiable and accurate environmental information, which is becoming increasingly imperative in the construction market, which is why ARGE took the decision to create generic versions for our national members. The development of generic Pan-European EPDs from ARGE, which can be used across a range of applications, will be critical in enabling hardware manufacturers to access the construction market and remain competitive in a market increasingly subject to European and international standards. “We hope that more national associations will recognise the commercial value of the programme and join us in Veneto to discuss the details and next stages for ARGE.” Register online at: http://arge.org/ events/2014-veneto/invitation.htm EMKA publishes enclosure & cabinet locking components catalogue EMKA has published its 2014 enclosure and cabinet components catalogue, featuring locks, handles, hinges, gaskets and electronic cabinet security products. Of note are the radio-activated Agent E swinghandle with RFID card reader and the biometric access control systems with fingerprint scanning developed in partnership with Digitus-Biometrics. The more conventional modular components in the catalogue are centred on the EMKA locks, handles, hinges and sealing profiles, but the 2014 edition offers greater coverage on technologies associated with these modular systems in production of standard and custom components for industry, transport, electronics and 58 THE SEP/OCT 2014 ISSUE SPONSORED BY ADVANCED KEYS production environments. This includes current and new items in quarterturn locks, compression latches, L, T, wing and padlockable handles with a complete programme of stainless steel equivalents. There are also rod locking systems and an extended programme of swinghandles, such as the 1317 vandalresistant programme specifically for external use, as well as aluminium windows and doors for cabinets and toggle latches for enclosures and cases plus cabinet and cable accessories. There is significant emphasis on clip-fix approaches - for example, in quarterturn locks and rod guides - for speed and convenience of assembly in production environments. The expanded section on the EMKA ELM electronic locking and monitoring systems includes rack management systems, the Agent E radio key/card reader programme and the biometric control systems referred to, with extended ranges of electronic actuated handles and latches for access control. www.emka.com To read more, visit www.locksmithjournal.co.uk
