Damaged doors: There is
such a thing as a ‘quick fix’
» » EVERY LOCKSMITH HAS
experienced the frustration of not
knowing the specifics of a call-
out before you get on site. That’s
understandable – few laymen
have the knowledge to describe
the problem in a meaningful way,
but it’s a big waste of time and
energy. Frequently you’ll end up
having to make a repeat visit when
you’ve sourced the parts you need.
Meanwhile, your customer is left
trying to manage the issue. In the
case of damaged doors, this is
particularly awkward, and in some
settings – such as mental health or
in the commercial sector – it can be
a real headache. Security and safety
can be compromised for weeks
because of a damaged door frame,
a lock that’s been kicked out or
something as simple as a lost key.
A QUICK FIX AND A
STRONGER DOOR
New on the market is a wrap-
around plate specifically designed
for use on timber doors which
promises to solve this security
nightmare. It allows a speedy repair,
making the door fully secure so that
normal service can be resumed.
It’s ideal if there’s a long lead-time
before a replacement door can be
sourced, but it’s also tough enough
to do a long-term job. Made from
1.5mm stainless steel, it actually
strengthens the damaged door.
The plates have been developed
by Creative Ironmongery. The
business’s Managing Director,
Alan Rees, says that he believes the
plates are unique – there’s nothing
like them on the market – but that
the potential is huge. “Right across
the residential and commercial
sector, in education, healthcare
and in industry, locks are being
smashed up. With these plates, the
locksmith can walk along, fit the
product and fix the damage.”

PRACTICAL AND ADAPTABLE
It’s obvious that such an
approach will save both time and
money, but the solution looks very
practical too. It’s been designed
to fit on any door, and because
damage to the timber means it’s
not possible to replace the lock

like-for-like, a replacement lock
is included. What’s more, there’s
a great deal of adaptability. It
works with standard mortice
locks, with BS standard locks and
can be used with euro profile
lock cases with 44mm or 54mm
dimensions (unless on tower
blocks). The plates can also be
used with Creative Ironmongery’s
strike plates. Other options include
back-to-back fixing or face-fixed
screws. Although the wrap-around
plate is substantial at 500mm long
and 80mm deep, it’s tidy and can
be finished in ways that match
décor schemes. As well as a satin
stainless finish there are brass and
bronze-plated options and any
RAL colour is possible.
Damaged timber doors are a
pain but keeping this one single
product on the van should make
them much easier to deal with.
