CHECK FOR LABELS (DOOR
INSTALLATION, CE MARKING,
DECLARATION OF PERFORMANCE
AND CERTIFIRE)
How do we know if fire door hardware
is approved and how do installers
access this information? The easiest
route is checking for the presence of a
CE mark for a hardware product, or for
the door itself, a door manufacturers
/ installers label of compliance. Life
safety products (hinges, door closing
devices, locks, panic and emergency exit
hardware etc.) need to be CE marked as
a mandatory measure on fire / escape
doors. Any product that is CE marked
must also by law have a Declaration of
Performance (DoP) in accordance with
the Construction Products Regulation
2011.
A CE mark may not always be
visible but it must be on the product,
instructions and or packaging
somewhere. For a lock it is usually
on the front of the faceplate and for a
hinge, this is commonly on the visible
face of the hinge leaf. When it comes
to door closers it can vary as some
have overlying covers. If you remove a
closer cover and look at the mechanism
underneath you will see a CE mark on
the body if it has been tested to the
correct standards.
For door sets the label of compliance
is usually found on the very top of the
door, so a “mirror check” is the best
way of checking this. Currently it is not
compulsory for fire doors themselves
to be CE marked, but it is expected that
CE marking of door sets for fire doors
will become mandatory from November
2018.
HOPPE UK also uses a separate,
optional third-party accreditation scheme
called CERTIFIRE for its CE marked
products. This is not a mandatory
requirement but it means that any
accredited products are tested and
certified above and beyond the levels
required for CE marking. The intention
is to give extra piece of mind to the end
user when purchasing the product that it
has been tested to the highest possible
standards.
