SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT IN
NEW SALVAGNINI TECHNOLOGY
» » ASSA ABLOY SECURITY
Doors, a UK division of ASSA
ABLOY, the global leader in door
opening solutions, has invested
in several new technologies at
its Lisburn manufacturing plant
in Northern Ireland.
Two new Salvagnini systems
are set to help enhance the site’s
manufacturing capabilities,
including improved lead times,
increased productivity and
reduced environmental impact.
The investment includes the
acquisition of a Salvagnini
P4lean-3216 panel bender, to
replace an existing older model,
and a Salvagnini L1X-30 fibre
laser system.
The new panel bender will
enable the organisation’s
SMARTform technology to
fold doors more accurately
and quickly, while its MAC 2.0
software ensures folding results
remain at a consistently high
standard. The software quickly
helps identify any potential
issues with a door during the
manufacturing process.
Meanwhile, the new fibre
laser system offers the highest
standard in industrial laser
cutting, combining high speed
sheet metal processing with a
precise cut quality.
Having been awarded the
ISO 14001 accreditation for
environmental management
earlier this year, the new
investment further contributes
to this objective. Consumption
of electricity and oil is reduced
with the new Salvagnini
systems, resulting in lower
running costs too.

‘ENGINEERING THE NEXT GENERATION’
» » THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERING
and Technology (IET) and ITN
Productions have launched a news
and current affairs-style programme
‘Engineering the Next Generation,’
which explores the challenges, careers
and future of modern engineering in the
UK.
With the government announcing
the £229 million of industrial strategy
investment, ‘Engineering the
Next Generation’ brings to life the
opportunities and challenges the sector
in the UK faces, the changes in policy and
long term impact on the UK economy.
‘Engineering the Next Generation’
showcases the work being done to attract
our future generations to engineering and
the diverse range of jobs available in this
sector, many which are unknown to career
seekers. The programme also looks into
how work experience and apprenticeships
play a vital role in attracting the younger
generation into a career in engineering.
Alison Carr, IET Director of Policy,
said: “ ‘Engineering the Next Generation’
addresses the current, most important
challenges we are facing in the
engineering and technology industry
as well as showcasing the huge range of
exciting and rewarding opportunities
engineering presents. Engineers are
creators, inventors and innovators and we
hope this programme inspires the next
generation of talent, who will play a vital
role in shaping our future.”
Simon Shelley, Head of Industry News,
ITN Productions, said: “ITN Productions
is delighted to have partnered with The
Institution of Engineering and Technology
to explore what is being done to attract
young people into engineering and the
careers available.”

Engineers of Tomorrow 2018 security &
fire apprentice competition now open
Registration for Engineers of Tomorrow 2018 has now opened, as the competition
returns to IFSEC International for its 20th anniversary year, 19-21 June 2018.
» » THIS YEAR THE
competition is taking a
further step towards tackling
the growing engineering
skills gap by adding a live
installation challenge for
fire apprentices, as well as
for those from the security
sector, following a successful
trial in 2017. This will mean
that in 2018, more than
60 young apprentices will
compete against each other
in teams of two, live on the
IFSEC show floor.
The three heat winning
teams of security apprentices
from this summer’s
Engineers of Tomorrow
competition will be joining
their industry at the Security
Excellence Awards, where
the overall winners will be
awarded the £1000 prize.
Next year the heat winners
from both the security
and fire challenges will
receive their invitation to
the awards,, in addition to
earning credits towards NVQ
