3 . “ How is it being mounted ?” It ’ s important to note that all door closers must be tested in the configuration that they will be fitted in , whether regular ( pull ), transom or parallel arm ( push ). If this proves not to be the case , this could potentially lead to fines and other penalties for locksmiths as the supplier – particularly if the door is a fire door .
4 . “ What other features are required ?”
Not all door closers are created equally , so it ’ s worth giving special thought to any features that could be particularly useful for the application in question . Is the door an external fire door or one that people might rush through , for example ? In that case , door closers with a backcheck feature , which slows the door down as it approaches a set angle to prevent it from hitting a wall , might be useful ( think of a school at home time !).
Many electro-magnetic door closers also allow for a choice between holdopen and free-swing functions . These are ideal where you want a more barrier free type solution , like busy corridors or care homes .
Ultimately , it ’ s vital that locksmiths understand all the legal requirements for door closers , while also being ready

with a flexible solution that makes the job of supplying and installing a product a simpler and more time efficient process . While the latter will help make a locksmith ’ s life easier , the former could save someone else ’ s life , and so must be considered .
