NEW NATIONAL SALES MANAGER TO
SPEARHEAD CALDWELL’S LOCK EXPANSION
» » A SENIOR NEW
appointment is helping world-
leading hardware experts
Caldwell significantly expand
its lock portfolio.
Lock sector veteran Mark
Frain joins the firm as National
Sales Manager. Over twenty
years, Mark has worked for
some of the UK’s biggest and
most respected hardware
companies. He will now apply
that expertise to helping
Caldwell spread the word
about its latest innovations.
“It’s a huge honour to be
joining a business as long-
standing and respected as
Caldwell. It’s one of the biggest
and most respected brands in
the world for a reason – and
I’m relishing the challenge of
helping it branch out into less
familiar areas.”
Alongside its trademark
spring balances and friction
stays, Caldwell is now able to
offer a range of window locks.
The cutting-edge Sinidex
Security Lock incorporates
floating mushroom technology
by the firm’s well-regarded
subsidiary Cotswold, allowing
it to offer robust security
performance and excellent
tolerance, even with sash
drops of up to 6.5mm.
The Sinidex Security Lock
will eventually form part of
a full casement window set,
along with hinges, stays and
handles, allowing customers to
quickly and easily manufacture
high-performance products.
FMB calls for apprenticeship levy reform
Apprenticeship starts decreased by more than third last year, highlighting the need to reform
the apprenticeship levy system, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).
» » COMMENTING ON THE
Department for Education’s
apprenticeship and levy
statistics for November 2017,
Brian Berry Chief Executive
of the FMB said: “The
disappointing results show a
35% drop in apprenticeship
starts in November 2017.
These are not finalised figures,
but even allowing for a certain
degree of change, this looks
‘disappointing
results show
a 35% drop in
apprenticeship
starts in
November
2017’
like a clear downward turn
in new apprenticeships.
Unfortunately, this is not
altogether surprising given
the intrinsic flaws in how the
apprenticeship levy works.
The lack of flexibility in the
value of vouchers which large
employers are able to pass
down the supply chain to
smaller subcontractors who
work for them is a key issue.

“In the long term, it is
imperative that we make
moves to iron out the flaws
in the apprentice levy. What’s
more, with the UK set to leave
the EU in just over a year’s
time, and our access to EU
workers in doubt, the next few
years will bring extraordinary
challenges.”
