Toeing and Heeling - An essential part of good practice when replacing locks

HINTS & TIPS
»»
IN THE SECOND OF HIS series of columns in The Locksmith Journal , Graham Jones , Managing Director of MPL Locksmith Training , explains why toeing and heeling is an essential part of good practice when replacing locks …
“ All locksmiths have been to properties where the hooks or
cams of a multipoint lock are grinding against the keeps , and the home-owner , quite naturally , has forced the lock to shut the door and maintain their security .
“ The inevitable consequence of this , over a period of time , is lock failure – the cams , hooks and / or strikers wear and become
ineffective meaning that a new lock is required .
“ What is important is that when the new lock is fitted , to replace the failed one , the door is properly ‘ toed and heeled ’ to avoid the same problems happening again . What does this mean ?
“ It means that packers need to be inserted to help to balance the door and ensure that it does not drop in the future – one of the primary causes of locks not operating properly .
“ Locksmiths need to understand how to ‘ toe and heel ’. They need to know how to de-glaze a door – whether it is fitted with glass or with a panel , how to remove the glazing beads without causing
damage , insert new packers and then re-glaze before fully adjusting the door with its new locks to ensure it is working fully and correctly .
“ Toeing and Heeling is not a complicated process , but like everything else there are techniques . It is an essential part of good practice when replacing locks and makes for better long term performance and peace of mind and security for the homeowner .”
Graham Jones is Managing Director of MPL Locksmith Training , one of the country ’ s premier providers of training across all lock types .
