CLOCKING OFF – EASIER SAID THAN DONE ?

As I write this , I ’ m still missing the hour we lost ( just last week ) but gearing up for summer . Longer days don ’ t always mean more to enjoy though . I can certainly be guilty of taking more time to do something if I have a bit of leeway ( and sometimes even if I don ’ t – just ask production here at TLJ !) On the Sunday following the clocks going forward , I strive to do everything as early as possible to make up for those missed minutes .
» WE OFTEN COMPLAIN THAT THERE AREN ’ T enough hours in the day , but if we treated each day as if we only had 23 ; keeping that 60 minutes spare just for us , would it make a difference ? Deadlines are essential . In publishing , we need them to make sure everything is in on time , according to a print schedule , and we ‘ close ’ our months early to make sure our magazines land at the beginning of the month instead of the end .
In industry , there ’ s a deluge of deadlines that keep the supply chain running – money in and out ( perhaps that ’ s the most important ), raw materials in and finished products out ( and we ’ ve seen all-too-recently the problems caused when that is disrupted ), even the importance of shift start times , breaks and time off ; people have deadlines to make sure all the right staff are in the right place at the right time ; just enough to get everything done without being inefficient .
Time-keeping keeps us going . And , now that many work from home or have adopted a more flexible approach to working ; there ’ s another consideration to take in . That ’ s the notion of knowing when you ’ re at work and when you ’ ve ‘ clocked off ’ mentally . Time for yourself can be tricky without the physical bridge of a commute – if you ’ re an out-and-about locksmith , is it easier or harder to find your domestic customers at ‘ home ’ when they ’ re working , or working while they ’ re at home ?!
With emails in the palm of our hands , are you being a more efficient worker sifting through your inbox on a Sunday night in preparation for the week ahead , or robbing yourself of time when you should factor it into your ‘ official ’ working hours ?
See you next time , and we ’ re already an hour closer … Gemma , Editor
