When change becomes a challenge

» THE SUN MAY HAVE HIS HAT ON , BUT THE BURGLARS are tooled up and ready to break in and take anything and everything they can . During the summer months , we are often reminded of the seriousness of home security , but also empty schools and businesses that may be looking to update their safety measures during down time . Add to this the new ( ish ) trend of working from home and it means locksmiths and security specialists will have no break during the summer holidays …
In this issue – July / August – we have contacted contributors that can update us all on how changes in society pose challenges to security .
For instance , the increasing popularity of cycling ; due to short term factors such as longer , lighter days and people wanting to be healthier in the summer plus longer-term issues such as rising fuel costs , environmental impact etc . seems to have few negative aspects . However , as cycling becomes more prolific , so too will thieves want to get their hands on more than your handlebars . Therefore , bike security – at home , at work , in town centres , etc . – needs to move up the priority list .
Secondly , as people continue to work from home , we need to consider commercial-grade security and access control in a domestic setting . And , we need to re-evaluate safety and security for workplaces that have less people in them at any one time and may be unused for longer periods , or have multi-use and multi-occupancy . In all cases , we must remember health and hygiene , and how we can limit spread of infectious diseases and illnesses .
Last but by no means least , political and environmental factors mean that a tiny marking on a product can have a big impact on where it can be sold , specified and supplied . Keeping not just abreast of these amendments and revisions ; but staying one step ahead means we won ’ t put ourselves on the line or anyone else in danger when deadlines come into force .
These are just a few examples of cause and effect in our industry . Whether it is the changing of a season that causes us to alter the way we think about security or something more permanent such as building regulations or ( local to global ) legislation , we must be able to effectively react to these changes .
Luckily , when you subscribe to The Locksmith Journal , we can keep you informed of all of the above and more . Not everybody likes change , but nothing ever stays the same . Knowing the full story and understanding all the options available means that when the inevitable – or even the inconceivable – does occur , you ’ re already on the right side .
See you next time , because I ’ m not going anywhere … Gemma

YALE TO HEADLINE GLAZING SUMMIT 2022

Industry giant Yale has been announced as the headline sponsor for this year ’ s Glazing Summit .
» THE EVENT , WHICH TAKES place on Tuesday , October 18 at Edgbaston Stadium , Birmingham , was a sell-out at the same venue last year as the industry got together for the first time in 18 months .
And with event organisers promising the one-day conference will be bigger and better this year , Paul Atkinson , Managing Director of Yale explained why the company has sponsored the event from its inception and is headline sponsor for the second year in a row .
“ Last year ’ s Glazing Summit offered professional value , having supported it since its inception in 2018 you can really see how it is evolving and developing into a key industry event in the annual calendar ,” said Paul .
“ What makes it so relevant is that it ’ s the only industry event where it ’ s not just about selling products , it ’ s about the industry getting together to professionalise , promote and share best practice and understand what the challenges are that we are all facing at all levels of the industry supply chain .
“ It ’ s also a great place to network ; different to a trade show in that the Glazing Summit has mainly prominent characters and influential people from the industry , so it ’ s definitely a worthwhile event to attend and we feel it ’ s a good event to represent your organisation .
“ We ’ re delighted to be headline sponsors for the event and we are looking forward to October .”
The Glazing Summit will feature expert and keynote speakers discussing the biggest issues facing the industry , with the day rounded off with the Glazing Summit Dinner in the evening .
Andrew Scott , founder of the Glazing Summit , said : “ Momentum is already growing despite being early in the year , and it ’ s brilliant to have a worldleading company like Yale headline sponsoring Glazing Summit 2022 . It really shows the calibre of the event .”
