“ It ’ s true that the UK has been seen to be quite far behind with smart locks ,” begins Tom Haigh , “ but it ’ s not necessarily because the need or want wasn ’ t there . The UK security sector is very keen on multipoint locks , which made it a lot harder to design and develop the concept , as opposed to a deadlock , for example , which is more prevalent in the USA and other markets .
“ In more recent years , companies began to launch smart locks using key cards and phone apps . And , alongside the rising popularity of other smart technology ; such as for doorbells , heating , lighting and entertainment , even home appliances - the awareness and desire for smart solutions continues to grow .
“ This potentially brings cause for alarm for some locksmiths , but if they embrace the changes , it can be a very lucrative opportunity , with very little re-training and at no detriment to their ‘ traditional ’ locksmithing . “ Meanwhile , I was working in IT security and as the son of a door hardware designer turned locksmith - I had a unique ‘ foot in both camps ’. Given the truly keyless nature of our products , the software that ’ s incorporated into them and the hardware itself , we genuinely believed that anything else we could find in the market sat in between traditional locks and our own .
