SECURITY SYSTEMS

Digital access growth drives Abloy UK expansion

» DIGITAL ACCESS solutions are increasingly becoming the go-to option in security – demand is rising for electronic wireless products , virtual keys and mobile credentials , with the latter alone experiencing nearly 150 % growth between 2017 and 2018 i .
Contributing factors to this trend include the convenience of easily issuing and revoking credentials and the cost benefits to the end user . The challenges of the past year also mean the need for wireless and contactless access have never been higher . This changing market has already led to a number of new appointments at Abloy since January 2021 , with an additional seven vacancies planned before the end of the year .
While these roles range in speciality , each new team member will be working alongside clients to specify digital products from Abloy and ASSA ABLOY ’ s comprehensive range of hard wired and wire-free locking solutions , digital key-based systems , and scalable EAC solutions .
This includes Incedo™ , the ecosystem that enables future interconnectivity across the entire range of ASSA ABLOY digital solutions from a single interface , alongside integrations with 3rd party enterprise systems .
Aaron Yule , Managing Director at Abloy UK , said : “ There are many reasons why digital access control is becoming more commonplace . Not only has the technology greatly improved in the past few years , but it ’ s also become more affordable .
“ This means that an organisation of any size can now enjoy the benefits the technology provides , such as convenience , control and realtime knowledge of who is using your spaces and how .
“ We ’ re looking to broaden the skills and experience we have in-house so that our customers can continue to receive tailored , bespoke solutions that tackle all their access control challenges . This also means futureproofing their security , as all Abloy and ASSA ABLOY products are interconnected and can grow cohesively together .”
To also support this growth , Abloy is expanding its education program with the recruitment of a Digital Access Solutions Academy Manager to maintain a fully trained and qualified supply and installation network for all digital access solutions . This will include training sessions , demonstrations and customer insight days held at Abloy ’ s bespoke learning facility based at its Willenhall headquarters .

THE ALARMING CONSEQUENCE OF NON-COMPLIANT SECURITY SYSTEMS

» ALARMS ARE ONE OF the many essential tools in the fight against crime , in particular burglary , theft and robbery . Academic research shows professionally installed alarm systems provide a greater deterrent and properties fitted out with them are less likely to be targeted by criminals , who know they may well be monitored .
The two main types of alarm systems are audible alarms and monitored alarms . However , they operate differently and are treated differently by the police .
Audible alarms sound a loud siren or bell , designed to scare a burglar and alert neighbours and passersby at the scene , hoping that they will then call the police to report a crime in progress .
In contrast monitored alarms are just that – monitored 24 / 7 by an approved commercial ‘ Alarm Receiving Centre ’ or ARC . When an alarm is triggered the ARC immediately checks the signal to verify it is a genuine alarm , alerts a keyholder and , if necessary , the police .
A key point to note is that the police will only attend an alarm signal from a monitored alarm as long as it complies with the National Police Chiefs ’ Council ( NPCC ) Security Systems Policy , which details how it is installed , monitored and maintained . It also requires security companies providing this service to be approved by an Independent Inspectorate Body and registered with the local police force . If they are not then there will not be an immediate response from the police , and indeed there may be no response at all .
It is therefore critical to both check that an alarm system is compliant and to only use a reputable alarm company which has been approved by one of the Independent Inspectorate Bodies . The two Inspectorate Bodies are the NSI ( National Security Inspectorate - www . nsi . org . uk ) and the SSAIB ( Security Systems & Alarm Inspection Board - www . ssaib . org ). Anybody can check-out installers ’ credentials at the Inspectorates ’ websites to ensure that a security company installing alarms is genuinely approved .
Ken Meanwell , Compliance Manager , Police Crime Prevention Initiatives , advises : If the alarm is not compliant there will not be an immediate police response , something which could be vital if someone is in immediate danger or property is being stolen .”
