GENERATE NEW BUSINESS BY HELPING TO MAKE OUTBUILDINGS SECURE We all know how important it is for householders to get the best professional advice and the right equipment to make their homes secure in our crime-ridden society. But as police and insurance statistics demonstrate, outbuildings are frequently overlooked and as a result, all too often become easy targets for thieves. This is despite the fact that people are increasingly living in their outside spaces more, so have more equipment – garden and other tools, barbecues and firebowls, garden furniture, play items and so on, much of which may be left out through the warmer weather (with the high risk of theft) but mostly which 12 THE JUL/AUG 2014 ISSUE SPONSORED BY TRADELOCKS does need to be stored away securely in an outbuilding, as autumn gives way to winter. Outbuildings include outhouses, traditionally attached to the main building and rarely very secure; garden rooms and summerhouses which are increasingly popular but may be some distance from the house and which often house furniture, soft furnishings, heaters, TVs, iPods, radios, bookshelves and even basic cooking equipment and drinks cabinets. Increasingly, people who work from home or who have limited space indoors, may use them as a study area with the added risk attached of leaving office equipment – computers, laptops, files, lamps, desks, chairs. They say every man should have a shed – but just how secure is it? Are valuable tools stored there? And if it is easy to break into a shed or other outbuildings where tools and garden equipment is stored, that equipment can be used by intruders to break into the house. Garages of course, are no longer just for cars. Many have workshops, house utility areas/ laundries, additional deep freeze facilities, cycle racks, storage for outdoor furniture/ large toys and games, gardening ancillaries. Locksmiths could generate more business by offering a service featuring products tailored to outbuildings of all kinds. To read more, visit www.locksmithjournal.co.uk
