KEYCUTTING
Key Cutting – Evolution
Key cutting is a fascinating segment in the Locksmith industry. Today, the increase
in the number of key profiles from new sources, such as new types of keys
that combine previously separate key types gives professional key cutters the
opportunity to continuously develop and create new business opportunities.
The following are main types of keys are
currently available in the UK:
• Serrated - (pin tumbler)
• Mortice (lever)
• Dimple (flat)
• Safe (lever)
• Tubular (radial pin)
• Car (single/double side)
• Car (laser, tibbe)
• Combined (dimple, laser)
Other key systems such as, disc
mechanism, cruciform amongst others
will also challenge today’s key cutters.
Historically, professional key cutters
have had a cylinder and a mortice
machine with side ward capability. In the
UK mortice keys are available with side
wards. As lock systems have increased
in complexity key machine technology
has evolved thus allowing Locksmiths
to specialise in providing a vital service
to consumers requiring additional
keys. Today key cutting equipment
can be procured from all corners of
the world. However, it is vital that the
correct equipment is purchased based
on numerous factors such as quality,
productivity, reliability, economics,
future potential. There will be other
considerations for each individual
including outright purchase or financing
particularly electronic machinery.

Electronic key cutting equipment has
revolutionised the key cutting component
of the locksmith industry. This type of
equipment increases capability from
simple duplication. Today keys can be cut
to code if keys are lost or lock is decoded
in the case of lost car keys. If keys are
worn original keys can be produced
by reading and cutting to original key
combination via key cutting software.
Cutting productivity has benefitted those
locksmiths who produce master keyed
cylinders or deal in high volume key
cutting with the evolution of electronic
machines.
