GOING FORWARD IN 2023

Stay on top of security trends in 2023

As we head into 2023 and the cost of living continues to rise , the financial strain on many homeowners has led experts to consider the potential impact this will have on crimes rates across the UK .
» EACH YEAR , THERE ARE new burglary tactics and changes in consumer behaviour to consider , which can shape the product portfolio of a locksmith .
So , to ensure you ’ re clued up on the latest crime trends and the most popular products on the market , Matt Claydon , Head of Trade at Yale UK , has shared his advice on how locksmiths and trade professionals can make sure they ’ re one step ahead when it comes to protecting homes and meeting the needs of their customers .
Crime rates
Tool theft
In recent years tool theft has been on the rise , according to recent figures from ‘ On the Tools ’, 78 % of tradespeople surveyed have had their tools stolen , with only 1 % fully recovering their valuable kit .
The value of the tools stolen typically cost between £ 1,000 to £ 5,000 , so the cost of replacing them will have a big impact on a business . That ’ s why it ’ s vitally important to guard your expensive tools against theft .
We would recommend not leaving any tools or equipment in a van or vehicle overnight
and , if possible , remove any tools and store in a locked garage or shed .
If it ’ s not possible to remove them from your vehicle , ensure it is locked and secured with additional security . An effective way to upgrade your security is by investing in a high-quality lock such as Yale ’ s Heavy-Duty Van Lock . This additional layer of security will provide protection against a range of attack methods .
If any tools are being stored in the garage or shed , ensure the access point to these spaces are securely locked . Using a high secure weatherproof padlock , you can keep your tools locked away and protected overnight and when not in use .
To add an additional layer of protection , tools can be stored in a locked toolbox using a maximum security padlock and a standalone alarm system can be easily installed in a garage or shed , alerting you if any motion is detected .
Another method of security is to install an outdoor camera with a floodlight to watch over the vehicle when it ’ s parked up overnight .
Vehicle Theft
Vehicle theft has always been an issue for vehicle owners and tradesmen with vans , and it ’ s set to continue into 2023 .
For homeowners , locksmiths can provide tips and advice on the best products to protect from vehicle theft . A steering wheel lock is a quick tactic to protect a vehicle and deter and opportunistic thieves .
Additionally , CCTV or a smart outdoor camera and lighting system , such as the Yale Floodlight Camera , will
not only light up the area where the vehicle is kept , but it will also allow you to view footage live through the Yale View app , giving the user full control over their security .
Key-cloning is becoming more and more prevalent , so you may wish to advise homeowners to invest in a RFID Blocking Box . This inexpensive measure is designed to prevent keyless vehicle theft by stopping thieves from copying car key fob information .
