THE WEEKEND WAS tailored to suit people who had little or no experience working with safes ; however there were a few experienced safe engineers in attendance . We had an attendance of 10 people who had traveled from all over the country to try their hand at opening all different types of safe , from standard lockouts to fired relockers and broken boltwork , from all angles using professional equipment to which most people haven ’ t got access ! There were more than 40 safes that needed opening ranging from budget home models right up to high security bank equipment .
On Saturday everybody met at the local cafe in Creswell for a hearty breakfast and
a quick brief , we then we all made our way to the unit where we began at the bottom of the spectrum with some budget home fire safes which are commonly found all over the UK . After a quick intro on how these types of lock mechanisms work and how to dial them up we ‘ cracked ’ on !
After everyone had looked through the scope and dialled the safe open each group picked a safe and make a plan of attack .
They were drilled from the sides and scoped with the 30 * endoscope to line up the gates . After everyone had looked through the scope and dialled the safe open we let each group pick a safe and make a plan of attack .
The first safe opened was by Sam from London . Again , the safe was drilled through the side and the lock was dialled open .
Walking around , Gareth and Paul from Hull had chosen a grade 2 insafe RDV deposit unit that had lost keys . This safe has a glass plate in the front of the door that if broken , fires re-lockers , locking the door further . After a quick chat with us they drilled a small hole in the side of the safe to avoid the glass , into the lock and decoded it by reading the lever ends and making a key !
