Q. WHAT IF THE CLOSER IS TOO STRONG FOR THE ELDERLY AND DISABLED TO USE?
A. Some closers have facilities for adjusting the closer’ s strength up or down( see the fixing instructions). This might be via the arm assembly, the body’ s fixing position, or by adjusting the pre-compression of the internal spring. This is very useful for fine-tuning to site circumstances, so that the closer is no stronger to operate than it needs to be. When adjusting a closer to reduce its opening resistance, remember that the closing power will also be reduced. For fire doors, it is imperative that the closer still closes the door fully into its frame every time. A higher efficiency design can help( possibly a cam-action closer) and you may have to consider a hold-open device or a swing-free closer, which will only operate in the case of fire. An automatic door operator may need to be considered if none of the above proves suitable.
Q. WHAT DO I NEED FOR AN EXTERNAL, OUTWARD OPENING DOOR?
A. These are the main points to cover:
• Fit the closer to the inside face of the door; rusting closers on smart entrance doors look unprofessional! Special anti-corrosion closers are available for external fitting, but they may be exposed to abuse.
• Check the maximum opening angle of the door, and make sure the closer can cope with it( Some closers have limited opening angles).
• Use a closer with backcheck, especially if the door is in an exposed location. Without this, a door caught by the wind will fly open at uncontrolled speed.
Q. IS THERE AN OPTIMUM CLOSER TO STOCK?
A. Many locksmith companies opt for a versatile, multi-functional closer. With power adjustment, backcheck and delayed action built in, such closers can be set up to cope with a wide range of situations. They reduce stocking requirements, and save trips back to base.

The campaign, designed to highlight IronmongeryDirect’ s commitment to supporting the trade, features an animated character aptly called Ron Mongery, inspired by real customers. The character will subsequently be rolled out to feature across all marketing collateral and channels.
The firm launched the advert towards the end of last year with Sky Adsmart as its tailored approach targets specific audiences, allowing IronmongeryDirect to reach tradesmen all over the UK.
