Window restrictors are required by law to adequately ensure that should a child or person with special needs apply force to it, the restrictor supports the weight of the person and restricts the window from opening and preventing a fall. Serious injuries and fatalities have occurred when people have fallen from or through windows in health and social care premises. There are three broad categories of falls - accidental, falls arising out of a confused metal state and deliberate selfharm or suicide. Should an incident occur where the restrictor has failed then a court may choose to prosecute all down the line from the installer to the supplier and the importer.
