AVOCET WAREHOUSE EXPANSION
ACCELERATES GROWTH PLANS
»»Avocet Hardware has
signalled its intent for 2015 by doubling
the capacity of the warehouse facilities at
its Brighouse West Yorkshire HQ.
The company has added an additional
10,000 pallet spaces, which, when
combined with a number of important
new distribution deals, and a significant
investment in stock in 2014, means next
day delivery is now available across any
product ordered from Avocet before
4.30pm Monday- Thursday and 3.30pm
Fridays.
Avocet also anticipates an additional 20
warehouse jobs being created in 2015 as a
result of the expansion.
Director Rythm Jain Saigal, said: “We
have been building the business steadily
since we took it over in 2012 and our
hard work can now be seen coming to
fruition.”
“We have distribution deals with
the likes of Duffells; we have Glazerite
becoming the first of what we hope will
be many fabricated door manufacturers
opting to install only ABS locks on its
product; we have new Elite Centres
coming on-board; new products on the
way; and to back that all up – we now
have the capacity to ensure our delivery is
unrivalled in the UK.”

COLOURFUL HARDWARE FOR CARE HOME
»»The newly refurbished Glaslyn
Retirement home near Abergavenny
features different coloured nylon door
hardware from HOPPE UK on each floor
to help residents orientate themselves.
HOPPE nylon pull handles, kick
and finger plates plus door stops and
escutcheons were fitted on more than 100
doors.
Robin Chatwin of architectural
ironmongers Price and Oliver said: “We
wanted to give a feel that wasn’t too
institutional but which met all regulations
and the client’s high specification for
performance and safety.”
HOPPE’s Paris range handles in
different colours were selected as they
comply with all of the dimensional
requirements of BS8300 with a return
to door design. With a 21mm steel core
they have been successfully tested to
BS EN1634 Part1 for 30 and 60 minutes
timber fire doors.
It was also important for residents to
be able to get out of their rooms easily in
the event of fire,” Robin added. “Using
ARRONE AR915 escape locks from HOPPE
with a compatible lever handles meant
we had a compete complete CE Marked
Lockset to comply with regulations and
which are so easy to use as the handle
overrides the deadbolt and latch.”

UK fire doors ‘not up to the job’
»»Analysis by the Fire
Door Inspection Scheme
(FDIS) of a sample of
assessments* carried out
by fire door inspectors has
revealed disturbingly common
and large scale problems in
buildings across the UK.
Identified issues that have
the potential to reduce the
effectiveness of fire doors to
hold back smoke and flames in
a fire include:
• Over 61% had problems
with fire or smoke seals
• More than a third had
incorrect signage
• 230 fire doors inspected
had gaps bigger than
3mm between the door
and its frame (as specified
in BS9999:2008 and
BS8214:2008)
• More than 20% had
unsuitable hinges
• Almost 1 in 6 had damage
to the door leaf
Neil Ashdown, FDIS general
manager, says: “These stats
make interesting reading
locksmithjournal.co.uk | jan/feb 2015
showing an average 3.7 faults
per door inspected. Fire
doors in the majority of UK
building stock are not fit for
purpose, these are the facts.
Compartmentation is the most
effective means for providing
fire safety and this survey
shows how seriously safety is
being compromised.’’
*677 doors were inspected
at 31 sites resulting in the
identification of 2506 faults.
