Keeping it in the family
Since starting in 1980 , NW Keys pride themselves as a major force in key distribution providing a nationwide sales and delivery service . Originally started by their father Jim and mother June , both are still available at-hand for support , however , no longer involved in the day-to-day . Nicky says : “ My father is turning 80 this year and is finally starting to indulge in retirement and more travel , much to our mother ’ s delight .”
Samantha began working for the family business first as the elder sister and trained in management and finance , followed by Nicky a few years later who trained in sales and marketing . Samantha commented : “ Our skills complemented each other perfectly in supporting the family business , it was inevitable we would move forward to run the business

eventually . We are also extremely lucky to have our cousin working with us on the auto and general side , complemented by our highly skilled staff members - many of whom you will have spoken to on the phones .”
What ’ s to love about locks ?
Women working in locks in leading roles is becoming more common , but when asked what they like about working in the sector , Nicky says : “ I like the changing nature of the business , solving problems for customers and fixing machinery , and even managing the complex stock and remembering product codes is great for memory training . Making life easier for our customers really drives us , helping them use the tools available for key identification .”
So , what ’ s new ?
Last year we launched our transponder bible The NW Keys Transponder Manual - 2024 edition at the MLA Expo , which is basically aimed at locksmiths / key-cutters who need to identify keys , chips ,

machines / remotes options for all brands of vehicles . Our plans for 2024 are to continue working on our website and ecommerce site to make all information ( car makes , models , years – keys , remotes and lock picks ) easily available to customers . We are on our sixth version to date ; we always listen to feedback from our customers on how we can improve and add new searches . We produce a monthly newsletter to inform our customers of new machines and products , now accessible on our website .
Flamin ’ Excellent Service
NW Keys strives to maintain its reputation of providing the best-ever service ; now employing 14 staff and has sales representatives on the road and in the warehouse supplying the country nationwide and beyond to Europe / worldwide . The building is by no means ‘ ordinary ’, situated in an old fire station in Bootle built in 1905 which still has the old original Victorian Tower . Nicky says : “ The tower is used as a

storage area now , but the views are stunning from the top . The building was previously the Flames nightclub , we bought it in year 2000 and it needed a lot of work , we finally moved into it in 2005 . Customers like to reminisce about their clubbing days , and ex-firefighters visit the building and tell us stories . The basement is complete with old water tanks and even an old cell door ( remnants of an earlier police station ). If any readers are interested in visiting this unique building , they are very welcome ( by appointment only ).”
