Thinking outside the box
Derek says : “ The biggest myth is that most locksmithing work comes from people locked out of their homes . This actually represents only 10 % of my work , the rest is dealing with failed UPVC doors and locks . Also , besides servicing the general public , there are also other contracts to win ; you have to think outside the box . For example , my customer base is diverse , I deal with letting agents and local charities , who need a reliable locksmith to look after their buildings . One of my clients is the Diocese of Liverpool , which involves working in some historic churches and at the Catholic Cathedral in Liverpool .”
Mental health in Locksmithing
This is where Derek ’ s wife ’ s experience of being a mental health nurse comes into play … Derek explains that locksmithing can be an intense line of work and can be 24 / 7 . “ It can be hard to take a break . Myself and Pam enjoy going away for long weekends in the UK . I ’ m connected with other friendly locksmiths who provide cover for each other customers during holidays through referrals . This helps my wife and I take a break when we need to . Anyone thinking of becoming a locksmith should just go for it . It ’ s not an easy profession to succeed in , but it helps to know where to go for the right support and training . I also offer training to new locksmiths which includes both a fiveday and 10-day course . I am a qualified trainer and assessor at the Highfield Qualifications Training Centre .”
