With the highs there must be lows – what challenges have you encountered ?
“ I ’ d say my journey at APECS has been a learning curve . It can be difficult developing and launching new ( and the right ) products into the market , this process has taught me patience and persistence whilst never losing my passion .
“ Another key challenge is managing prices , we ’ re so committed to prioritising our customers and their interests but in such a turbulent market , sometimes making those difficult decisions are necessary . However , since I ’ ve been with APECS , there have only been two price increases – something that wasn ’ t taken lightly and hopefully , our customers recognised that .”
How has the industry evolved and how do you think locksmiths should futureproof their business ?
“ I believe the industry ’ s survival hinges on how well we adapt to the digital age . We ’ ve seen other sectors transform because of technology and it ’ s fair to say that the built environment , and all its sub-sectors and trades tend to be playing catch-up . For the locksmiths , I ’ d say pay attention . Start to investigate and potentially invest in digitising aspects of your business , don ’ t ignore Google , for example – use it to your advantage so that potential customers can find you more easily . Understanding how to harness the power of the internet is an essential skill , one that will enable any locksmith to remain relevant and competitive .”

“ Yes , my partner is a locksmith . Interestingly , we met during my MLA course and our relationship started after the MLA show . I don ’ t believe many people knew about that , until now …
“ Being in a relationship with a locksmith has its advantages , although , we often find ourselves discussing locks outside of work hours . The benefit is that we are each other ’ s source of advice and knowledge . The other side of this is coming home to find the locks being picked – all the time . But we generally find the humour in it .
“ Although my partner has had some quiet weeks at work , he has managed to establish a good reputation in the area and will often get recommendations from previous customers . Thankfully his business is going well giving the current climate . I have , however witnessed firsthand the challenges – it ’ s been a funny old year – my heart really does go out to those who have struggled to find work .”
