Hidden Gems in Our Archive

It ’ s amazing what ’ s hidden in the archive . Most locksmiths know that we are in the process of indexing and making the huge number of documents in our collections a little more accessible . It became the turn to catalogue the contents of a number of deed boxes and large dispatch boxes filled with unsorted and semi-sorted documents and other ephemera mostly from the Frima , Fincher and Dowson collections .

» HOWEVER , THE FIRST ITEMS TO show you are a selection of colour bromides , and from an earlier acquisition ; from the family of Jack Taylor . You will remember Jack Taylor was the inventor of the Ingersoll lock during the final years of WWII ; he later went on to form the Taylor Lock Company when many patents and designs were attributed to him and his son Andrew .
Firstly , a nice story about Cherished Number Plates : “ The first photo showing ‘ 3 LOK ’ and ‘ KEY 3 ’ was taken at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu circa 1976 / 77 . Both were entered in a Cherished Number competition to find the Registration Number most closely associated with the owner ’ s business . ‘ 3 LOK ’ won the day much to chagrin of Carey Parker , Secretary of the MLA and owner of . KEY 3 ’.
“ In 1975 Evelyn Brodie and Andrew Taylor hosted a dinner for JWT ( Jack Taylor ) to mark his 50th year in the lock industry . The ‘ 3 LOK ’ plate was presented to JWT by Carey Parker on behalf of the MLA . Carey had apparently

^ The plaque reads : This Spanish sword made by Andrea Ferrara belonged to Thomas White who was commissioned in Oxford Blues ( Royal House Guards ). His tomb adjoins this case .
been driving somewhere in Norfolk and saw the number on the wreck of a VW camper van dumped in a field . He bought the remains for £ 12 to get the number but had to pay the additional cost of scrapping the remains of the van .”
The next two photos depict two of several bandit resisting security display cases undertaken by the firm ; the second photo was taken in the Church of St Mary Magdalen , Church Lane , New Milton . The sword had been displayed for many tears until it was stolen circa 2003 . It was eventually retrieved Andrew Taylor made three locking clamps to allow the sword to remain on display .

Finally , a special enclosure was made for the picture of HMS Hood installed in Boldre Church near Lymington . The painting is part of the memorial to the crew of HMS Hood . Captain Ralf Kerr , CBE , RN lived in Boldre and was killed in action when the Hood blew up during the action with the German battle cruiser Bismark in 1941 .
