Most locksmiths already know that trust is built long before a job starts. Increasingly, it starts online— with how clearly professionalism, experience, and credibility come across to a customer comparing options quickly.
In practice, that is where independent assessment and recognised standards can help give customers greater confidence, particularly when they are inviting someone into their home or business.
MLA membership and approval provide clear, recognised indicators that a locksmith has been properly assessed and is working to recognised standards.
That includes both business approval and individual membership standards— helping support confidence not only in the company being chosen, but also in the individual arriving at the customer’ s door.
MLA Approved Companies For MLA Approved Companies, that assessment is built around three core areas: vetting, inspection, and qualification.
Vetted – Relevant individuals within MLA Approved Companies are required to hold a satisfactory Standard DBS check.
The MLA is recognised as an umbrella body able to facilitate access to Standard DBS checks specifically aligned to locksmithing activity following inclusion within the Exceptions Order of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. This
supports higher professional standards across the sector while helping provide greater confidence for both locksmiths and customers. It also provides a higher level of disclosure than a Basic DBS check, reflecting the responsibilities associated with working in customers’ homes, businesses, and secure environments.
Inspected – Approved Companies undergo regular inspections reviewing working practices, business standards, and operational professionalism.
Qualified – Technical competence is assessed against recognised locksmithing standards, currently demonstrated through the ABBE Level 4 Certificate in General Locksmithing.
The qualification is regulated by Ofqual and awarded by ABBE, an Ofqualrecognised awarding organisation for the built environment sector. Level 4 is broadly comparable to the first year of higher education study, reflecting both technical knowledge and practical competence developed through realworld locksmithing.
Together, these areas help provide clear and consistent indicators of professionalism for customers looking for reassurance when choosing a locksmith.
MLA Personal Membership
Alongside business approval, the MLA also supports individual locksmiths through personal membership pathways.
Registered Members are required to complete a satisfactory Standard DBS check, provide character references, and undergo a review process involving existing MLA members.
Qualified Members have additionally demonstrated competence against recognised locksmithing standards through the ABBE Level 4 Certificate in General Locksmithing.
All MLA Personal Members, alongside staff of Approved Companies, carry MLA identification cards confirming DBS status. When you’ re out on jobs, this helps customers identify who is carrying out work at their property and provides an additional layer of reassurance.
We continue to listen to feedback from members and the wider industry and are currently exploring further ways to strengthen this area, including supporting greater public awareness around checking identification when a locksmith attends a property.
