A Locksmith’ s Perspective on 3-Star Cylinder Locks

» IN THIS ARTICLE, I WANT TO share a frontline perspective on 3-star euro cylinder locks— the kind of insight you only get from real-world experience, not from marketing brochures or product spec sheets.
As locksmiths, we see the full lifecycle of locks: we install them, upgrade them, troubleshoot them, and respond when they fail— or when someone tries to defeat them. While standards such as TS007 are important, our day-to-day work gives us a clearer picture of how these products really perform and how customers interact with them.
This piece isn’ t written for manufacturers or specifiers. It’ s written for fellow locksmiths— to start a more open, practical conversation about what we’ re all seeing out there in 2025 and how we can use that to raise the standard of our work and our industry.

A Brief Introduction
I’ ve been in the locksmith industry since I was 14 years old. I passed the MLA BLI exam at 18— the youngest person in the UK to do so at the time— and I’ ve since built AA Lock and Key in Bristol into a respected, MLA-approved company. Over the last two decades, I’ ve completed thousands of jobs and developed a strong understanding of what works— and what doesn’ t— across both domestic and commercial environments.
I also founded The Perspicacity Life, a platform designed to promote skilled local locksmiths and raise standards across the industry by sharing real, onthe-ground experiences. This article is part of that mission.
What’ s Really Happening with 3-Star Cylinders?
The 3-star euro cylinder is now widely regarded as the gold standard for domestic front-door security. However, just because something is rated highly doesn’ t mean it always performs perfectly in the field— especially once you account for how it’ s installed, maintained, or misunderstood by end users.
Here are some of the key issues and observations I’ ve encountered.
1. Are We Seeing More Failures in 2025?
Yes, but context matters. Many of the issues I’ ve seen stem not from the locks themselves, but from improper use or maintenance.
Customers often apply the wrong lubricants, such as WD-40, or attempt DIY solutions that cause long-term damage. In some cases, we’ re also seeing budgetfriendly 3-star cylinders entering the market that, while technically compliant, are not built to the same quality standards as more established brands.
Additionally, some customers express frustration with the key control systems that come with high-security cylinders. The higher cost of replacement keys, or the need to order them through registered suppliers, can be a deterrent for some households.
2. Customer Awareness Is Still Low
A significant challenge is the general lack of understanding around lock security standards. Most customers are unfamiliar with terms like TS007, anti-snap, or Sold Secure testing. When presented with budget, 1-star, and 3-star options, many instinctively choose the cheapest unless we take the time to explain the differences.
This responsibility often falls on us as locksmiths, and while we’ re happy to advise, it’ s not always practical to deliver a detailed product education during a time-pressured call-out.
There is also some confusion within the trade. Not every locksmith has a full grasp of the differences between star ratings, cylinder construction, or the implications of security key systems. Ongoing education— both for ourselves and for our clients— is essential.
3. Installation Quality Remains a Weak Point
In my view, the most common issue compromising 3-star locks is improper installation. Even the best-rated lock can be undermined by poor sizing or fitting. For maximum security, the cylinder should sit flush with the external handle. Overhanging cylinders create an attack point. I’ ve also seen cases where the antisnap side was installed facing inward— a simple but critical error— or where the retaining screw was overtightened using a power driver, risking internal damage. These mistakes are avoidable and highlight the importance of methodical, informed installation. If you need a quick
