Escape into nature
this autumn. . .
Zahara de la Sierra is one of Spain’s
heritage white villages, situated just 20
minutes from Ronda in the dramatic
landscape of the Sierra de Grazalema,
a protected nature reserve. The hilltop
town overlooks an azure lake, with
breathtaking views from the castle
ramparts. This is horse riding, canoeing
and hiking country with the stirking
Garganta Verde gorge just a few miles
away. The local olive mill El Vinculo is
one of the oldest in Spain and has been
producing virgin olive oil since 1755.
Al Lago Hotel & Restaurant enjoys the
perfect location at the base of the town,
with ample parking and uninterrupted
views over the lake. Owners Mona and
head chef Stefan Crites met in New York
and moved to Spain 11 years ago. They
viewed over 140 properties before they
fell in love with the venta at Zahara de
la Sierra. Renaming the venta Al Lago,
they refurbished the kitchens and four
large bedrooms to the highest standards.
Each bedroom is cool and contemporary
with French windows overlooking the
terrace and lake. Employing the original
staff, Stefan learnt to speak Spanish
and researched traditional local dishes.
In turn, he introduced new ingredients
and began reinterpretting many of the
Spanish classic dishes.
Al Lago Hotel & Restaurant regularly
hosts special events such as food tasting,
Indian cuisine weekends with live sitar
music and flamenco shows. So escape
