Two local young ladies share a bit about their passion for needlework , what got them started and what they love about it .
Needlework of choice : Crochet
Needlework of choice : Knitting
Hannah Mclean , 26
Hannah is a teacher and also the owner of local ice-cream brand , Han-Made . She started crocheting four years ago when her mom taught her .
“ I have always been interested in crafts and thought it might be nice to learn a new one . The bug seriously bit and I have crocheted so many things since then : pillow covers , toys , hats , scarves , hot water bottle covers , blankets . My husband actually had to force me to give some of it away because our house started looking a little too woollen . I love crochet because it gives me something to do with my hands and there is something so nice about sitting on the couch on a winters eve , fi re crackling , and me crocheting . I have since also learnt how to cross-stitch and embroider , but I always fi nd myself coming back to crochet . Current project : a big , fl uffy white snood for winter !”
Sarah Van Remoortere , 32
Sarah is a property broker and an outdoor enthusiast . She says she initially learned to knit as a young girl at school .
“ I was never really that interested in doing it at the time as I was a very active child and still am very outdoorsy but every now and again I would pick it up again and always felt it was therapeutic and relaxing . More recently , my mother started knitting again and making some amazing jerseys for my brothers and I . Although she is in a completely different league , it got me interested in trying it out again . I love creating things and being artistic but I can ’ t draw or paint very well so already knowing the basics of knitting allowed me to get into that zone of creating something and my attention being consumed by some kind of art . I have made some very simple baby blankets for my god kids and it ’ s nice to give someone a gift that you spend time making yourself . I am onto making a beanie at the moment , let ’ s see how it turns out .”
