Digging Deep
Ireland is not widely known for having extensive natural
resources or a rich mining culture but in fact Ireland
is Europe’s largest producer of zinc and second largest
producer of lead. Leading the charge in unearthing
the wealth of resources in the Irish landscape are
the researchers at iCRAG, the Science Foundation
Ireland funded Irish Centre for Research in Applied
Geosciences. Their activities range from building 3D
models of the subsurface, and methods to unlock our
energy and raw materials reserves, to discovering new
ways to manage our groundwater, which supplies an
incredible one fi fth of all water used in Ireland.
