MUSIC! HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED A STRING OF EVENTS IN YOUR LIFE THAT WAS SO OBVIOUSLY GOD OPENING DOORS AND LEADING THE WAY?
That was how I came to be a part of the OSOTA family. When I arrived at OSOTA, even though there was not a single music instrument or sheet of music in sight, I strongly knew God would provide, because of what He had already done. notes on their instrument. The beginners will take these first five notes and turn them into music for their first performance at the Winter Concert: 5th graders on Thursday, December 8th and 6th graders on Tuesday, December 13th both at 6:30 pm in the OSOTA Auditorium. We kicked the school year off hosting the Instrument Petting Zoo with a great turnout and some crazy animal like sounds coming from the Multipurpose Room as scholars tried out all of the instruments, both band (winds/ percussion) and orchestra (strings).
Orchestra scholars spent the first quarter learning how to care for their instrument, strengthening their technique and note reading skills, and are now preparing the music for their first performance at the Winter Concert, also on Tuesday, December 13th at 6:30 pm in the OSOTA Auditorium. Once scholars decided what they would play, we went to work securing an instrument for every scholar. Local schools and even OSOTA parents donated a combined total of 19 band instruments, 15 music stands, and three music stand racks (way more racks than we have stands for, but we know God is going to provide the funds to fill those racks with the music stands we need soon!). While we are off to a great start, we still are requesting help in some “need” areas: Music Stands ($659.96) Tuba ($1,795), Instrument repairs ($1000).
More instrument donations are always welcomed in every area – Band (flute, oboe, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, F horn, trombone, baritone, tuba and all percussion instruments) and Orchestra (violin, viola, cello & string bass) - in preparation for possible new possible scholars joining our family throughout this year as well as for the scholars we will have join our family in the coming years as the Band and Orchestra Programs grow. Several schools graciously allowed us to borrow a combined total of 18 instruments for the school year, and a few may even donate or allow us to purchase a few at the end of the school year. God even provided a good working full sized, 4-valved tuba worth thousands provided for only $50.
So what have the scholars been up to with all of these beautiful instruments and music? It has been exciting to see the scholars get better and better on their instrument each week, but even more rewarding has been getting to know each scholar and build those relationships that have allowed our band and orchestra family to grow as a tea
