produce such products. It is good for the economy, but not for
sustainability. Considering sustainability as a guiding principle, we have
to convert a negative element to a positive element.
Conclusion
Ingels’ urban designs have been widely spread out in high-density
cities in Europe because of a cultural mindset more focused on
sustainable lifestyle. Still, with his success in Europe, Ingels’ Hedonistic
Sustainability movement has started to extend to North America. In
recent years, he has completed or proposed several projects in
Manhattan, New York. The Two World Trade Center (see Figure 3),
which is designed by Bjarke Ingels and the BIG team, is now under
construction and is expected to be built in 2022. According to one
article, “The design of 2WTC is derived from its urban context at the
meeting point between two very different neighborhoods: the financial
district with its modernist skyscrapers and TriBeCa 3 with its lofts and
roof gardens. The design combines the unique qualities of each, melding
high-rise with low-rise and modern with historical” (2 World Trade
Center).
TriBeCa is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It is an
abbreviation for “Triangle Below Canal Street.”
