disclose to the nurse any of their cultural views or spiritual practices because they wanted to be a “good” patient and make their nurse happy. This was damaging to the care in the recovery room when the nurse did not know anything about their strong feelings against the use of opioid prescriptions. The foundation of trust between a patient and their nurse is built on respect and understanding of cultural and spiritual differences around topics such as pain. As America becomes increasingly multicultural, nurses will have to continue improving their knowledge about their patients and strive to become more “culturally competent” in their nursing care.
