Spring 2015
JUAN & LUISA
By Bill Frank Robinson
Juan Márquez, a sturdy lad
born and raised on a
farm in the hills of
new Mexico, hard by the
Colorado border
Desperation seized a rock
a rock that sailed tried and
true into the back of
Juan’s head
Louisa a comely wisp
of a girl lived on
the farm next door
admired Juan from afar
“Estúpido!” She screamed as she
stood eyes blazing, face scowling
She stood by the road
as he passed by
on the way
to school
Enlightenment moved slowly into
Juan’s skull as he stood rubbing
his head, “My gosh! She loves me!”
She raised her hand
in greeting
he looked straight ahead
his mind intent on the task ahead
In the village, at the Fiesta
wearing her holiday dress
Louisa danced and everybody
looked, smiled, and applauded
but Juan looked straight ahead
his mind intent on the task ahead
At sixteen Louisa stood by the
road waiting for Juan
her time was short
soon marriage would
pass her by. Juan arrived
his eyes straight ahead
