Then in the late 1980s and early 1990s some 93 birds
of Swedish, Spanish and Welsh origin were released
in north Scotland and Buckinghamshire. The first
successful breeding was recorded at both sites and
two years later kites reared in the wild themselves
reared young for the first time. Now successful
breeding populations have become established in
both locations.
Thanks to these successes the red kite has gone from
being a red-listed bird, with the highest level of
conservation concern, to a green-listed bird, with
the lowest level of concern.
The eventual aim is to ensure that red kite breeding
population expands to colonise all suitable habitat
throughout the UK. The large, graceful bird of prey
can now be seen soaring over woods, heathlands
and other open areas in most counties in the UK
including Surrey. Sightings of the once extinct bird
now stretch the length of Surrey from Leatherhead
to Farnham.
