Celebrating 100 years of Lions serving their communities
NEWS FROM LIONS : JUNE 2019
T
he Club held its annual fund
raising Swimathon on 11th
May. The event took place at De
Stafford School and was as popular
as in previous years; in all 14
teams took part including the
Bletchingley Skills Centre who
join in every year. Funds raised
through sponsorship are shared
by the Lions and participating
teams. The sum raised will be
known when the next edition of
this magazine is published. The party took place in April. Lion
Chris Frith’s wife, Berenice, spoke
at the Club’s social dinner in May
and told how they had been with an
organisation called CHECK which
offers a broad range of support to
schools in Kenya. The CHECK
team visits a school in Kimilili every
12 – 18 months and this year both
Chris and Berenice were invited to
join the team. They left the UK on
13th January and returned on 5th
February. teachers to develop special education
which is in its infancy in Kenya.
They also took part with other
members of the team in renovating
three early years’ classrooms in the
girls' primary school, painting tables
and chairs orange, blue and green.
Another fundraising event by the
Club is the Easter Egg raffle which
is held in pubs in and around the
Tandridge area. The money raised
this year allowed the Club to donate
£1000 to St Catherine’s Hospice.
The cheque was presented to the
Hospice by Lion President Rita
Reissland and Lion Tony Carter. The Lions funded primary and
special needs resources which were
distributed to two primary schools,
a special needs unit and a special
needs school. Chris and Berenice

CHECK sponsors 32 primary and
27 secondary children from needy
families. The cost is approximately
£25 per year for primary children
and £337 for a secondary child.
The Lions Talking Newspaper’s
38th AGM was also held last month.
The Newspaper is funded by a 250
Club, the subscription to which is
£12 a year and there are monthly
prizes – it’s not a subscription to
the Talking Newspaper which is a
completely free service.
Every year the Lions organise and
host an afternoon tea for those
who work so hard to produce the
newspaper and of course listeners
are also guests.
