Chandos Choir Celebrates 50th Birthday
1
969 was a momentous year
- first man on the moon, first
Monty Python, first jumbo jet
flight and another jumbo called
Lulu disgraced herself on Blue
Peter - and the Beatles gave their
last live performance. As one
musical age ended, another
began, as Coulsdon’s Chandos
Choir was born, and in October
this year we are celebrating our
Golden Anniversary.
From the beginning our objective
has been “educating the public in
the art and science of music” –
while giving entertainment and
enjoyment to our members and
audience alike. In 50 years, our
repertoire has evolved but remained
true to our classical roots. Works
by the great composers are now
mixed with an eclectic mix of styles
from early music right through to
modern musicals, sometimes in
the same concert!
environment. We foster talent
locally and encourage musicians
in the early stages of their career,
whether they are a singer, conductor
or instrumentalist. And we are
blessed with the extraordinary gifts
of our choirmaster of ten years,
Robert Randall, who can simul-
taneously play eight vocal parts, fill
in as second bass or soprano soloist
and conduct with his eyebrows.
Our 50th Birthday celebration
concert on 12th October is at St.
Andrew’s Church in Coulsdon,
starting 7.30pm. The programme
is packed with favourite works,
including Faure’s Requiem and
Vivaldi’s Gloria which we first
sang in 1969. It promises to be a
memorable and hugely enjoyable
occasion and tickets are £12 from

As times and fashions have changed
the Chandos Choir has changed
too and will continue to adapt. One
thing that won’t change, however,
is that we sing to give joy to each
other and to those who hear us.
We welcome all who share our love
of making good and interesting
music in a friendly and supportive
