Caterham Oxted & Godstone Lions Club District 105SE England Celebrating 100 years of Lions serving their communities LIONS NEWS FOR SEPTEMBER 2019 T he Godstone Fete and Donkey Derby, held on August Bank Holiday, is one of the busiest fund raising events the Club has and this year was no different, except that the heat this year was record breaking. Nonetheless the team, some of whom had helped put up the marquee the day before, started early in the morning with bacon sandwiches and tea and coffee. As the morning got nearer to lunch time it was time for burgers and bangers to be cooked and served with hot or cold drinks. Normally some of the cooks would do between one and three hours but because of the tremendous heat the rota was put to one side and it was half an hour on and half off for those cooking the burgers and hot dogs. 26 Later popcorn and candyfloss were available, and when the supplies of cold drinks got low the Club had to buy more from the local shop. Unfortunately, although the heat did not spoil the day for all those attending it did mean that some stalls closed before the Donkey Derby had finished all the races, and the Lions also called an end to cooking earlier than usual. At the time of writing it is not known how much money the Club has raised for local good causes but it is probably fair to say that the figure will be down on last year. It was just too hot for bangers and burgers! and cream. It wasn’t anything like as hot and in fact at one stage it was thought that the event would have to move indoors as rain threatened. However it went ahead in the garden which allowed members to not only enjoy the tea and scones but to observe the baby buzzard calling as it flew overhead. There were also some old bi-planes flying from Biggin Hill (it was thought). So an entertaining afternoon. Anyone wishing to join Lions or find out more about us is welcome to come along to a meeting. Just call Tony Carter on 01883 741809. You will find a warm welcome awaits you.
