n February, the students at Collins got very busy preparing special book projects and presentations for our first annual Literacy Showcase. We had 230 students sharing details about their favorite books with judges from all over the district as well as our community. Some students dressed up in character and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time sharing and learning about some great children’s books. Students that participated received a ribbon, a certificate and a free book . We followed up our event with a special viewing time for parents.

Literacy showcase & wacky reading
For Read Across America Day on March 2, 2017 the students from Collins Elementary School participated in Wacky Reading Day. We began with the event with the book I Can Read With My Eyes Shut by Dr. Seuss which was read over the PA system. Then the students got creative and found wonderful and wacky positions for silent and partner reading. Students read under a desk, draped over a chair, laying down, etc.) We created a school video complete with a poem inspired by the style of Dr. Seuss and illustrated with photographs of our students and their wacky reading fun.
