El Paso Tigers

Poetry Month and free books

T

his has been a busy month with so many literacy activities occurring at the El Paso High Library.

One of our Centennial projects was called “1 Century, 1 School, 1 Book” in which the entire campus was asked to read the book _A Good Long Way_ by Rene Saldaña, Jr. On three Fridays the librarians held a Readers’ Luncheon and provided drinks and goodies for the students in the Reference Room. There was also a discussion forum / blog on the library’s website.

Paige Parker planned and coordinated a National Haiku Day contest on April 15th with over 150 Haiku entries submitted.

JP Rogers, in collaboration with the El Paso Public Library’s Teen Poetry Month Contest, had over 60 paper submissions of poetry. Poems could also be submitted online.

Another Centennial project is being spearheaded by JP as she is continuing to capture teachers and staff on their own READ poster. They really like having the posters in their rooms to spark discussion about literacy.

We celebrated National Library Week by starting our annual Giant Book Give Away on the 11th! We are having to extend the book give away because it is so popular!
