A glance in the life of Lar

Last year my sister took a German studies class so she would have the chance to go to Germany. When she went there, she stayed with a German family for two weeks. After staying with them, their son Freddy came and stayed with us for two weeks. After him being here for a couple days, we where best friends. It was cool having him around and learning about Germany. I also taught him a lot about the English language and how American families live. It was hard to understand him when he first came but after a while he started picking up on English. In Germany the letter W is pronounced like a V, and Freddy thought it was the same way with V to W. When he said words with a W in them he would pronounce them like a V. He would say my mom’s cooking is “wery” good, And violent TV shows have a lot of “wiolence”. After about a week we corrected him because we didn’t realize why he was saying it that way.

The first night he came we went to a football game. Freddy had never been to an American football game and he really enjoyed it. We went to the football game the next week so he could see another one before he had to go home. My sister was mad because he was her exchange student and he spent all of his free time with me instead of her.

When it was time for the exchange students to go home Freddy was already planning to come back soon. Our whole family was sad when he had to leave, even though he had only been here for two weeks, he was like a brother to me and it was hard to watch him leave. It was even harder to wake up at three in the morning to bring him to the school so he would make the bus. We stood outside the high school and said our goodbyes to all the German students and than they left.

The next year, Freddy came back to stay. He came in August of 2013 and leaves June of 2014. Since he has been here we have done so many things that all brothers do. First we went to football games with friends and went to parties. Freddy is used to partying a lot in Germany so we had to go. Freddy hadn’t seen a football game since the year before when he came and he was excited to see us play.

Soon after he got here, we went camping in Wisconsin, one of the most fun things we have done since he got here. While we where camping we went fishing, had bon fires, grilled burgers, went swimming, and most important played pool, while we where there we spent over $35 in games of pool alone. There was also a quarter machine that you could win quarters if you put quarters in. Needless to say we lost quite a bit of money on that game also.

During football season we also ran cross-country. There aren’t a lot of sports to do in Germany so Freddy wanted to do as much as he could while he’s in America. It turned out Freddy didn’t like running as much as he was expecting to. Practice every night was a hard thing for Freddy to get used to but after a while we got comfortable with the routine and it all worked out fine. The best part of cross-country was the suppers at people’s houses. After cross-country we started wrestling right away. Freddy was not planning on wrestling, but after many, many long discussions we convinced him to try it out for three days and if he didn’t like it he could quit. It turned out that he liked wrestling and he wasn’t half bad. He enjoyed meets and he also won a few times. If he would have been here since he was little wrestling than he could really be a great wrestler today. He didn’t ever wrestle varsity but he did however get a varsity letter for being a contributing part of the team. After wrestling season I started Freestyle and Greco roman wrestling but we could not get Freddy to try that. These styles of wrestling involve a lot of throwing and potential injury. He was not willing to do that. Freddy than started lifting a lot so he could het stronger and look big. He was lifting every other day for a long time.

Freddy being here has made this year the best year of my life. I couldn’t imagine this year without him. He is my best friend and brother. I can remember when he first got here and his English was not very good and he had a strong accent. Everyone wanted to be his friend because he was different and cool. After everyone realized he was a person just like the rest of us, people started leaving him alone. We made a lot of new friends though.

One day Freddy and I decided to go for a run to the river and back. We ran about four miles to the river and decided to wade in a little before going back. We ended up getting fully in the water and drifting down stream a little bit. It was okay though because I knew of a bridge we could get out at about a mile down the road from where we where. It turns out the mile by road is about eight miles by river. Around two or three hours later of twisting, turning river we finally made it to the bridge. We got out and ran to Rebecca Millers house because it was closer than our house. Her dad let us use his phone and gave us a ride home.

This is only one of many stories we have together. I am so glad I got the chance to have him live here and I’m sure he’s glad he could be here too.
