October, 1919 THE LANDSWOMAN My Ideo I Small f'arm. - Contin.uethodJ ot f'COOOtniRing in th11 dlrect1on. During the war pnrt of Hll8 "'ith plAnt so dllllcult and wire-netting almost impossible to p;ocu.re trom mnnulacturiog firms, substitutes have had to be the order tor many of my etudentll. 11Iy policy tbroug:hout has been to put thr.ae producers on to local "bargainrol. The latter he would buy from a well· known breeder of ped1grce laying stock, paying a nioo price tor same, and aocurlng, if J>O"Iblo, o. cockerel bred from a hen with a given egg-record. At least one or two such cockerels might be procured to mate with the owner's beat pulleta fo-r his own ~ The runs would be arranged accordJng to a set plan of the 1\P.ld thought out carefully beforehand, so that space can be left f6r wide alleys to take a hon10 and cart. And all enclosures will be fitted up by way of gates, etc., to save time and labour. The ftnt set of pens, would, of course, be placed near the reanng station. By the time matmg up is dUI' the houses for tbe breeders will be ready, and the owner will have by him the records of e\ery one of his pullets during October, November, and December. Those with the highest records will be mated up for his own US(' in par· ticular, as the ch.icka from these he will reserve for future develop- ment of his strain. llLs spring plans will include the hatching out of about 100 pullets as layers the next Winter when matur1t1 is reached. His hAt~hlngs will be out mainly in March for h1s own use, although they may perhaps be spread over February, :.\larch, and Aprll in part. The J.'ebruary cockerels will make the beat breeders, and ogg-productton from the pullets of various hatehings will bo in relays, the March birds starting to lay in October. I refer, of course, to a heavy breed like the Light Sussex. With incubators ono might allow for 50 chicks hatehlng out of each 100 eggs, and of those chicks 50 per cent. may bo regarded as cockerels. One might, therefore, say thAt it requires 100 eggs, if incubator-hatched, to yield 25 pullets, not allowing for deaths. On t ho other hand, as one becomes more experienced the per· ~ ntago of ha.whes will be increased, and, as many broody bens will be set, this will help the average, as bateh.lngs nnder hens are invariably high wltb home-produced e~. To secure our 100 pullets, we will need to incubate 400 eggs as the minimum, and with these ensured swylus eggs and chicks should be disposed of by means of ach-ertislng. l am keen on this businee.s, aa it increases the returns tremendously. What 1s more, it is the snowball system lnwnsifted where one satisfied customer recommends another, and these customers come again and again, season after season. The ftrst season the £ale of sittings and chicla should be engaged 10, as no time should be lost 1n getting publlc1ty. Tho "locals " must be attracted In every way, and their custom sought by local ad\-'"Crtiaing. They repre- sent a cheaper trade, of course t han what is secured by means of clever advertisi ng in the speciafut papers. The first season, how- ever, prices will be reasonably low, and, apart from attractive stationery a neat little catalogue will be 1ssued out setting the claims of the Light Sussex, and any other breeds that have been added , aa mentioned, to secure custom. Each year, as tbe farm develops, so will the prices advance. T o be t:Qntin!Ud-" A LirJit~q from the Land,'' "fJy Puu;tO. Otce-n (Newnu].)
