THE LANDSWOMAN
My Fairy
T
HERE'S a. jolly littl£1 fairy who lives and works
with mo ;
She droaaes like a Land Girl, becau:.E' I'm one, you
sco.
The caterpillars make her smocks, they're uRN} to
weaving things ,
Hor broceh('s nro of molo-
s kin, n.nd her ga.iwrs,
beetles' wings.
She's alwn.ys up a.t hn.lf-past
five, and turns me out of
bed,
And if I don 't got up at on eo
she calls mo sleepy head.
There's no timo like the
morning for hoMst work,
you know,
And so we're really glad to
see our good old fri<'nd the
hoe.
We three together set to work
- tho fairy, hoe, and I,
And when wo move tho man -
gold loaves, the dew begins
to fly.
The boo will sca.ttt>r all tho
drops around us in tho air,
And tho fairy tries to catch
thorn as she flutters here
and there.
The sun bea.ms gliding through
the trees delight to see her
play,
And say they never sa.w a
field whore work ca.n be
so ga.y.
Perha.ps wo meet some
spiders and pass the time
of day,
But they're always in a
hurry, and ha.ve nu time
to stay.
Tho ladybirds a.re pleasantcr,
r and ofwn stop to chat,
But we novor speak to nasty
grubs, w·ho look so sleek
and fat,
Because they bito our man-
golds off just underneath
the leaves
And oat great holes inside
the roots, the horrid,
naughty thieves !
Of course wo know tho beetles,
theylet us ha.ve theirwings
To make the fairy 's gaiters,
a.nd sovoral other things.
Wo a.lwa.ys laugh when wo'ro
a.t work, and have suoh
jolly f\m,
That wo find t he day is O\Tor
beforo it's well begun. ·
• .o\nd when at six wo boar tho
bell, we put away our boo,
Prize,:Bullr at A,.letbury.
She fhcs up to my shoulder, and home again \\O go.
)ly fairy is tbo nicest friend. for sho can understand
Just how I feel and what if~ like to work upon the
land.
