With a mix of residential and commercial areas ranging from lakes to islands and forest , local public safety agencies are a key to keeping the west lakes area safe .
The West Hennepin Public Safety Department serves the cities of Independence and Maple Plain . The Orono Police Department serves the citizens of Orono , Mound , Spring Park and Minnetonka Beach . Long Lake contracts with Wayzata Police for its public safety services , and the Minnetrista Public Safety Department serves Minnetrista as well as St . Bonifacius .
Fire services are provided by the Long Lake , Maple Plain and Mound fire departments . LLFD provides its services to Long Lake , Orono and Medina - though the city of Orono is in the process of creating its own fire department . The Maple Plain Fire Department serves Maple Plain and Independence , and the Mound Fire Department serves Mound , Minnetrista , Minnetonka Beach , Shorewood and Spring Park .
