• Professor Hodgkin was only
the third woman to achieve
a distinction in Chemistry
from the University of Oxford.
• She taught former Prime
Minister Margaret Thatcher
who installed a portrait of her in
Downing Street in the 1980s –
even though Professor Hodgkin
was an open Labour supporter.
• In 1953 she was one of the first
people to see the model of the
double helix structure of DNA
in Cambridge.
• When she won the Nobel
Prize in 1964, she was by
then a grandmother.
