O
ver 500 people descended upon The King’s University
to celebrate Homecoming September 26-28. The festive
weekend celebrated the 35th year for the University and
featured everything from Alumni games to a Music Alumni
Concert to an enormous carnival.
On Friday, the weekend started with four hard-fought games
between Alumni Eagles and Current Eagles teams. Despite
close games, the younger Eagles pulled away with a 3-1
record – only the women’s basketball Alumni managed to
grab the bragging rights as the women took a thrilling 2-point
victory from the younger Eagles.
The evening also featured three Alumni concerts and three
Student concerts in the Level Coffeehouse – big thanks to
alumni Justine VanderGrift (BA, ‘09), Melanie Salte (nee Fehr)
(BA, ‘09), and Joel Kliene (BA, ’97; B.Ed, ‘01) and Remco
Dalmaijer (B.Sc, ‘98) for treating attendees to wonderful
music.
Saturday brought a full day of celebration starting with a
breakfast, Best Lectures from three distinguished King’s
faculty members (Dr. Harry Cook, Dr. John Hiemstra, and
Dr. John Hull), and art lessons with Evelyn Martin. Then
the community gathered for a Kickoff celebration in the
Atrium which included a liturgy led by Dr. Peter Mahaffy, and
speeches from board chair Bill Diepeveen, President Melanie
Humphreys, and SA President Brenna Hansen (B.Sc., ‘15).
After this big morning, it was time for lunch and the carnival.
Over 450 people joined us for a BBQ lunch before braving the
+5 degree weather for the petting zoo, concession stands,
mechanical bull, face painters, bouncy castle, giant slides,
and even the dunk tank. A series of reflections from King’s
Alumni on how King’s helped shape their vocation, a magic
show in the Level Coffeehouse, and a tremendous Music
Alumni Concert in Knoppers Hall rounded out the day.
On Saturday night, more than 300 people filled the gym for
the celebratory Community Banquet and Silent Auction.
Many people ended the weekend by joining in worship at
Fellowship Christian Reformed Church the next morning.
What a blessing to welcome so many old and new friends
back home!
