King’s Alumni Leads
University of Regina Volleyball

R
egina is known for its love of the Roughriders, but in a
city that bleeds green, King’s Alumnus GREG BARTHEL
(BA, ‘04) has his eyes set on excellence in a different sport –
men’s volleyball.
This History graduate was a member of the King’s
athletics program in the mid-1990s, as King’s prepared
the program for joining the ACAC. When King’s entered
the ACAC in 1997, Greg took an assistant coaching
position with the team. After two years of assistant
coaching, Greg was thrilled to take the reigns as the head
coach of the King’s Eagles men’s volleyball program.
In his eight years as head coach, Greg led the team to
many successes: 02-03 ACAC Bronze Medal, 04-05 ACAC
Bronze Medal, two players selected as All-Canadians [Hans
Doef (BA, ’04), Rob DeJong (BA, ’06)], as well as numerous
top-15 national rankings. While coaching at King’s, Greg
also finished his last classes towards his own BA, and took
several volunteer coaching opportunities (Alberta Volleyball
Association Men’s Volleyball coach, Northern Alberta
Volleyball Club’s Under-16). In 2005 Greg was honored as
both the ACAC and CCAA Men’s Volleyball coach of the year.
Greg took the position with the University of Regina, a
member of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), in
2007. The move to CIS has been thrilling for Greg: “I get to
spend every day in the gym training volleyball players. This
is my passion, and I love it.” Greg continues to cultivate a
competitive team in the ultra-competitive Canada-West
division of the CIS while setting his sights ever higher. In 2010
and 2011 he coached the Men’s Jr. National team. In 2011 his
role with the team included a trip to the World Championships
in Brazil.
Greg is grateful for the early coaching opportunity he received
at his Alma Mater: “King’s is where I got my start. It was
a really good experience. Some truly great athletes came
through King’s. If it wasn’t for King’s and the opportunity I had
there, I would never have gotten to where I am today.”

10 Questions
with Jon Heinen

I
n July, Alumni Relations Manager Josh Noble sat down
for 10 questions with JON HEINEN (B.Mus., ‘ 04). Jon is
currently living in Fort McMurray, working for Christian Labour
Association of Canada (CLAC). Jon is a proud King’s Alumnus
and all-time “kills” leader for men’s volleyball.
JN: Thanks for taking the time Jon – so what do you do at
CLAC?
JH: We represent workers who do everyday jobs working
for an employer. Think grocery stores, nursing homes,
construction. I work with employees, encourage their training,
and otherwise represent them in their everyday working life.
JN: How did you come to King’s originally?
JH: I took a year off after high school. I thought, “I’m never
going to school. I’m going to be a framer.” Then I came out to
a few volleyball practices with some friends… and everything
fell into place. I liked the team, but didn’t like the lifestyle of
framing. At this point I can’t give King’s enough credit for
where I am today. Particularly I think of Dr. Segger and Dr.
Dudiak. They were quality educators and mentors. After my
