T
he King’s University College has two Queen Elizabeth
Diamond Jubilee Medal winners in our ranks —
President Dr. J Harry Fernhout and Dr. Arlette
Zinck — honoured for their significant community service and
contributions to society.
President Fernhout attended a ceremony on January 15, along
with other presidents of post-secondary institutions from across
Alberta, where Premier Alison Redford presented him with the
medal.
“Alberta is fortunate to have such dedicated, visionary leaders
in the post-secondary system. I wanted to recognize these
leade rs, and celebrate the work they do to help build our worldclass centres of learning,” Premier Redford said in an email to
President Fernhout.
Serving as president for the past eight years, Dr. Fernhout led
the development of a comprehensive five-year strategic plan
for King’s and created a decentralized leadership structure in
a positive climate of support and recognition. He also worked
hard to promote King’s to the greater community, and to
advocate for Canada’s independent post-secondary institution
sector.
“I was surprised and honoured to receive Premier Redford’s
letter informing me of my selection for this award,” remarked
President Fernhout. “I enjoy the privilege of representing King’s
in community service, and I view this award as recognition of
the many ways the King’s community contributes to the wellbeing of society, locally and provincially—and, in fact, globally.”
English Professor Dr. Arlette Zinck was nominated by Linda
Duncan, MP for Edmonton Strathcona for her volunteer effort
leading a team of scholars in providing a program of education
for Omar Khadr at the special request of the U.S. military. She
was awarded her medal last November.
joyful experience to offer a little practical help to a complex and
painful set of circumstances,” says Dr. Zinck “I am also grateful
to Linda Duncan for recognizing a truth that Christ teaches,
but which is increasingly overlooked: Justice is not only about
punishment, but also about reconciliation and restoration.
Real justice brings renewed healing and health to everyone.”
The medal celebrates Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th anniversary
on the throne. As part of the commemorative celebration,
60,000 Canadians will be recognized for their contributions
to society. ?
