tudents, Cody Gautreau and Sara Barnard, and
Associate Professor of English, Dr. Philip Mingay,
participated in the 3rd Annual English Undergraduate
Conference at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton on
February 1–2, 2013. The conference, this year entitled “Reading
Identity: Inside/Out,” is an annual two-day conference that
provides opportunities for undergraduate students from
various post-secondary institutions to present research
papers, participate in panel discussions, and meet instructors
and students from other universities. The theme was the
exploration of identity across a broad spectrum—in society,
culture, and aesthetics—with attention to dynamics of exclusion
and belonging, exile and return, rewriting, reversal, and
reconfiguration, in relation to individuals and communities, texts
and genres of all kinds.
Micah Centre Director, Roy Berkenbosch, reflects on Just
Worship: “One of the keys lessons taught at the Just Worship
conference is that worship is deeply formative. The songs that
we sing, especially the ones we sing over and over, shape
our spirituality more deeply than the sermons we hear,” said
John Bell. This is certainly true — and it is a dangerous truth,
because we tend to be a lot less mindful about what we sing
than what we preach. The problem is not so much what we sing
and include in our worship; what is more important is what gets
left out. So many songs we sing are intended to comfort and
soothe, but Jesus usually was more interested in provoking the
complacent out of their comfort zones. The conference really
helped students get that message: when it comes to worship —
be idyll no more!” ?
A fourth-year English major who plans to pursue graduate
studies in English, Gautreau presented a paper entitled “The
Flower and the Stone: Analysis of Public and Private Selves
in Carol Shields’ The Stone Diaries.” Cody’s session included
students from MacEwan University, The University of Alberta,
and Mount Royal University, all of whom presented papers on
topics of Individuality and Identity. This session was chaired
by King’s instructor Philip Mingay. Gautreau enjoyed the
experience, especially the questions and answers. “Presenting
at the MacEwan conference was an exciting opportunity
to experience what it’s like to be part of a larger academic
community,” said Gautreau. “We received feedback and
questions from high-level academics, and were able to network
with students from other universities around the province; it was
wonderful to get fresh perspectives on our work.”
Congratulations
Graduates!

adventures.
In another session, third-year English major Sara Barnard
presented a paper entitled “Something is Rotten in the State of
Denmark: Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the Intersection of Identity
and Reality.” Her fellow presenters were all MacEwan University
students, with each paper tackling the role of divinity in the
quest for identity.
“I was most impressed by the quality of the papers in this
session,” said Professor Mingay. “Sara gave a very sophisticated
reading of Hamlet, and she responded to questions with
great skill.” ?
