alumni news
Dr. Tyler Foster
King’s alumnus Dr. Tyler Foster
(’91 BA Eng/Phil) is spending his
sabbatical working with radio, but he
certainly is no disc jockey. Dr. Foster,
who graduated from King’s when the
school was still at its original downtown
campus, is currently an assistant
professor in the Department of Physics
and Astronomy at Brandon University
in Manitoba. After three years serving
as the department chair, Dr. Foster is
enjoying a well-deserved sabbatical. He
and his family have moved to Penticton
while Dr. Foster pursues research at
The Dominion Radio Astrophysical
Observatory (DRAO).
Dr. Foster specializes in galactic
structure studies and his current
research is concerned with the structure
of the Milky Way Galaxy. In order to
search for these galactic answers,
astrophysicists use radio waves because
interstellar dust that will block the
investigations of most other types of
high frequency waves do not disrupt the
low frequency radio waves. Dr. Foster,
with his professor’s knack for simplifying
difficult concepts into everyday
illustrations, describes it as, “trying to
make a diagram of a forest while chained
to a single tree. There are unique
challenges that come with not being able
to observe from a distance.”
After finishing his Bachelor of Arts at
King’s, Dr. Foster went on to do further
academic work at the University of
Alberta where he finished his Ph.D in
2004. He then spent three years working
at DRAO as part of a post-doctoral
program before being hired at Brandon
University. Dr. Foster, his partner Marie
(’92) and daughter Holly (5) are happy
to return to Penticton to DRAO and we
wish him all the best as he continues to
educate students and search the galaxy
for answers. ?
