Rickshaws, Rivers and Renewal:
A Journey to Bangledesh
O
n Sunday, August 19 a group of six students and the Director of the Micah Centre Roy
Berkenbosch started their journey to Dhaka, Bangledesh. They spent two weeks in
this small but populous country. They were the guests of staff and partners working with World
Renew, formerly known as the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, who introduced the
group to both urban and rural communities.
They encountered men, women and children who are engaged in holistic strategies to overcome
the effects of poverty and to alter its causes. The King’s group learned about the history of
Christianity in that predominantly Muslim land, visited with tribal groups in the Garo hills, learned
about the effects of climate change in the lives of vulnerable populations, and explored cultural
values dynamics that shape community life.
The students, who are part of a SSCI 300 course, were joined in Dhaka by Ida Mutoigo,
Canadian Director of World Renew. ?
Students, Faculty and
Alumni Connect at Chemistry
Conference
T
his past May, seven of King’s full-time summer research
students travelled with the chemistry faculty to the National
Canadian Society for Chemistry Conference in Calgary,
joining 2,000 other chemists. The students who made
the trip were Matt Ripmeester, Joel Woudstra,
Jesse Vanderveen, Kristen Versluys, Heather
DeBoon, Cassidy VanderSchee, and Anita
Birkland. Jesse presented a talk on his senior research
project. Cassidy and Matt teamed up to present one poster
on their research work, and Joel Woudstra presented another.
Both posters were on the solid state nuclear magnetic
resonance work they had done with Associate Professor of
Chemistry Dr. Kris Ooms. While at the conference, faculty and
students connected with alumni Joel Kelley who is currently
doing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of British
Columbia, and Jon Martell who is doing outstanding work in his
graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan. ?
