+ FOUNDATION nEWS FOUNDATION NEWS Past Foundation Projects T he King’s University College Foundation was established in 1985 to be an independent financial support organization for King’s serving under the same Mission Statement and Statement of Faith, adhering to the same values and vision as King’s. Highlighted are some past projects the Foundation has completed to assist King’s: * * * A two-year debt reduction campaign carried out in 1986, raised over $300,000 and was a major component in the drive to eliminate the debt and allow King’s to plan its future with new and expanded programs and a new campus. In 1990 the Foundation became involved in its most ambitious and challenging undertaking in the Facing New Challenges capital campaign for the current campus. The campaign’s objective was to raise $10 million in gifts and pledges from the King’s supporting community over a five-year period. This objective in gifts and RRSP investments was met in December, 1996. The Foundation raised $300,000 for the bachelor of commerce program. At the time, King’s had no way of establishing this program. With the aid of the Foundation, the program was * launched in fall 2000 - much earlier than initially anticipated. The project was completed in 2005. The Foundation continues to provide two business scholarships of $1,000 each per year; it also manages the endowment funds for The Boessenkool Business Scholarship and The Cornerstone Business Scholarship. * * When the student residence apartment building was constructed in 2003, the Foundation raised $50,000 to purchase the design and architectural drawings so that additional buildings can be constructed in the future. In 2005 the Foundation also committed to providing King’s with a grant of $50,000 per year for a maximum of three years to cover any shortage of residence income that might arise during the first years of operation of this new student residence. Another significant project was undertaken at the Foundation’s Annual General Meeting of November 18, 2005, when it agreed to raise $780,000 over six years starting in 2006/2007, in support of staffing and other needs for the secondary education after-degree program. This project is nearing completion. foundation news Profile: Kevin Bandstra Foundation scholarship recipient C ommerce graduate Kevin Bandstra was the rec ipient of The King’s University College Foundation Business Scholarship for the past two years. The scholarship is awarded to a returning third-and fourth-year student enrolled in the commerce program. In order to be eligible the student must maintain at least a minimum average of 3.30 and demonstrate a Christian commitment. Bandstra was not only an excellent student with a strong Christian commitment, but also a dedicated member of the King’s student body. He served as VP Internal and President of the Student’s Association in his second and third year respectively, and was editor of Ballyhoo, the annual creative arts publication. In addition, this past year he assisted Roy Berkenbosch, director of the Micah Centre and interdisciplinary studies, in planning the winter Interdisciplinary Conference entitled “You’re richer [when] you think”, exploring the issues of money, consumerism, the ideological commitments on which they rest, and the role which we play in this economy. Originally planning to transfer to the University of Alberta after a foundation year at King’s, Kevin opted to stay at King’s for the full four years of his undergraduate degree. The Foundation’s Business Scholarship assisted him as he pursued his degree at King’s. “As a student every little bit helps make the financial commitment of a university education a little easier,” says Bandstra. Graduating this April, Bandstra has already obtained employment in Vancouver working as a manager. Armed with his King’s education, Bandstra is ready and prepared for the challenges ahead.
