a Bright Future For computing science

O
ver the past year, the Computing Science (CS) department
at King’s University College has expanded. With the
addition of Dr. Joe Hoffert this summer, we are pleased to
announce that the Computing Science department has fulfilled
its long-term goal by expanding to three full-time professors
in support of the fully accredited 4-year Bachelor of Science
degree in Computing Science. Given the new look of the
CS department, we would like to introduce you to the King’s
Computing Science team: Dr. Joe Hoffert, Professor Mike
Janzen, and Dr. Andrew Tappenden.
Joe Hoffert received his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science at Vanderbilt University
in May 2011. His research includes quality of service (QoS)
management for publish and subscribe (pub/sub) middleware
with a focus on autonomic adaptation to support QoS in
dynamic environments. Moreover, he is interested in discerning
how computing science in general and specific subdisciplines of
computing science in particular integrate with the Christian faith
in giving glory to God.
Joe comes to King’s with a wide range of experience, having
previously worked for the Boeing Corporation. He was involved
with model-based integration of embedded systems as well
as with virtual and constructive simulations. Joe has been
designing and developing software systems for over 25 years
and distributed systems for over 16 years. He received his B.A.
in Math and Computer Science from Mount Vernon Nazarene
College in 1986 and his M.S. in Computer Science from the
University of Cincinnati in 1990.
